Choosing the right blanket
Rolled erosion control products are specified by how long they need to last and how fast water moves across them. Straw and straw-coconut blankets cover the short and medium term while seed germinates. Full coir blankets and coir netting last longer and hold up on steeper slopes and in channels. Turf reinforcement mats are permanent synthetic matrices that let vegetation grow through and then keep reinforcing the root mass afterward.

Coir holds moisture against the seedbed, which matters when you're trying to establish native seed in high-desert conditions with a short window of reliable rainfall. On wildfire burn scars in the Flagstaff, Prescott and Payson corridor, blankets buy time for revegetation before the first heavy monsoon runoff reaches hydrophobic soils.
As the fiber breaks down it adds organic matter back to the soil instead of leaving plastic netting behind — the reason we default to biodegradable products anywhere permanent reinforcement isn't required.
Installation
Blankets go over a prepared, seeded and tracked surface. We key the top edge into an anchor trench, roll down the fall line with the required overlap, stagger the seams, and staple on a pattern set by slope angle and product. In channels the blanket runs with the flow and is check-slotted so undermining can't propagate.
Poor contact is the most common failure we see on other crews' work. We rake out contact voids before stapling, because a blanket bridging a rill does nothing.
