Excavation — Arizona
Jenterra performs trenching, foundation excavation, and hard-dig work in caliche and rocky ground across Arizona, followed by structural backfill compacted in lifts to the geotechnical spec. We shore or slope trenches to OSHA requirements and locate utilities before we open ground, not after.
Trenching and foundation excavation
We excavate utility trenches, footings and foundation systems to the depths and tolerances a civil or structural plan calls for, with shoring or sloping matched to soil type and trench depth per OSHA excavation standards. Every excavation starts with an Arizona 811 utility locate — a step we don't skip regardless of how confident a site plan looks.
- Utility trenching for water, sewer, electrical and irrigation lines
- Foundation and footing excavation
- Trench shoring, sloping and shielding per OSHA requirements
- Dewatering where perched water or utility leaks are encountered
- Spoil management and haul-off coordination
Caliche and hard-dig ground
Caliche and decomposed granite show up across much of Arizona at depths that catch standard excavation equipment off guard. We bring rock-rated attachments — hydraulic hammers, rippers, trenching teeth sized for hard material — rather than grinding a standard bucket through ground it isn't built for, which keeps schedules realistic instead of optimistic.
Structural backfill and compaction
Backfill around foundations and utility trenches gets compacted in controlled lifts, with material selected to match what the geotechnical report or utility spec requires — native soil where it qualifies, imported structural fill where it doesn't. Improperly compacted trench backfill is one of the more common causes of settlement cracking over utility lines years after a project closes out, so we treat this step as structural, not incidental.
Frequently asked questions
- Do you locate utilities before excavating?
- Yes, every time, through Arizona 811, regardless of what the site plan shows. Undocumented lines are common enough on older sites that we don't skip the locate.
- How do you handle caliche during trenching?
- We bring hydraulic hammers, rock teeth or specialized trenching equipment sized to the material once caliche depth is identified, rather than working a standard bucket or trencher against ground it can't cut efficiently.
- Can you backfill and compact to a specific density spec?
- Yes — we compact in lifts to the density the geotechnical report or utility owner specifies and coordinate with a testing lab where verification is required.
