What geocells do
A geocell is an expandable honeycomb panel of perforated HDPE strips. Filled with aggregate, sand, or topsoil, each cell confines its infill laterally, so load spreads across the panel instead of punching through. The result is a stiffer, thinner section that resists rutting and holds material on grade.
On slopes the same confinement stops surface material from sliding or washing during monsoon flows, which is where most Arizona slope failures start.
Standard vs. HD applications
Lighter-duty cell depths and wall textures suit pedestrian paths, erosion protection and landscape slopes. Heavy-duty sections — deeper cells, textured and perforated walls — carry construction traffic, equipment yards, access roads and parking.

Vegetated vs. hard-armor infill
Topsoil-filled cells let native grasses and shrubs root through the perforations and lock the slope in permanently — a living, green alternative to rock armor that keeps improving as it establishes. This pairs well with hydroseeding and native revegetation.
Where flow velocity or traffic rules out vegetation, the same panels take aggregate or concrete infill for a hard-armored surface. Manufacturers report aggregate savings of up to roughly 50% versus an unconfined section; treat that as a vendor claim and confirm the section with your engineer.
Installation
Installation starts with a prepared, compacted base — manufacturers typically call for a minimum 2% grade so water moves off rather than ponding under the panels. Panels are expanded, staked or anchored on a set pattern, joined at the seams, then filled and screeded, with overfill on trafficked sections.
On slopes we anchor at the crest, run panels down the fall line, and tie into toe protection so the system is restrained top and bottom. Our crews do this work themselves — the same people who sold you the panels are the ones on the slope.
