How plant-based dust control works

Plant-derived binders — soybean-ester, lignin, and sugar or starch based formulations — coat and bind fine soil particles into heavier agglomerates that stay on the ground instead of lifting into the air. Applied as a dilute spray and worked into the surface, they build a flexible crust that tolerates traffic and re-forms under compaction.

Because the binder is organic rather than hygroscopic salt, performance does not depend on pulling moisture out of the air — an advantage during Arizona's dry pre-monsoon months when chloride products lose effectiveness.

Chloride vs. bio-based

Calcium and magnesium chloride are the default in a lot of Arizona sitework, and they work — but they are corrosive to equipment and rebar, and repeated application adds salt to soils and runoff. Over time that over-salinization damages roadside vegetation and can carry into washes and waterways.

Rule 310 compliance

Maricopa County Rule 310 requires dust control on construction sites, including stabilized haul routes, disturbed surfaces, storage piles and trackout control at every access point. A stabilized surface treated with an approved suppressant, documented and re-treated on schedule, is a straightforward way to hold compliance between inspections.

Application & re-treatment

Application is a water-truck or distributor spray at a rate set by soil type, traffic volume and surface condition, usually after grading and light watering so the binder penetrates rather than sheets off. Heavily trafficked haul roads take a higher initial rate and a maintenance re-treat; low-traffic lots and stockpiles hold far longer.

We supply product by the tote or tanker for crews that apply their own, or we apply it ourselves — including scheduled re-treatment through the dry season and after monsoon washouts.

Are plant-based dust suppressants better than chloride?
Yes for most sites — plant-based suppressants are non-corrosive and biodegradable and won't salt your soil, unlike calcium or magnesium chloride, while still binding dust effectively. Chlorides can still make sense on some unpaved road maintenance programs, and we'll say so if that's your case.
Is it Rule 310 compliant?
Plant-based suppressants can be used as a surface stabilizer under Maricopa County Rule 310 when applied and maintained to keep the surface stabilized. Compliance depends on your dust control permit, application records and re-treatment schedule — we apply and document both.
How long does one application last?
It depends on soil, traffic and weather. Low-traffic lots and stockpiles commonly hold a full season, while active haul roads need periodic maintenance re-treats. Manufacturer longevity claims vary widely, so we set a re-treatment schedule based on your actual traffic.
