The perimeter and interior toolkit
Most Arizona construction sites run stormwater compliance through a SWPPP or dust/erosion control permit that specifies best management practices at the perimeter, at drainage structures, and at the site entrance. Sediment control products are the physical BMPs that satisfy those requirements, and each one addresses a different point where sediment can leave the site or concentrate.
None of these products stop erosion at the source — that's the job of blankets, mulch, hydroseeding and soil stabilization. Sediment control catches what erosion control didn't, which is why the two categories are almost always specified together.

Choosing the right BMP
Silt fence works on sheet flow with modest drainage area behind it — it needs to be trenched and keyed in, not just staked on the surface, or the first real storm undermines it. Wattles and fiber rolls do a similar job on shorter runs and steeper slopes, and are easier to move as grading progresses, but they don't hold back the volume a properly installed silt fence can on a large drainage area.
Inlet protection has to match the inlet type — curb inlets, grate inlets and area drains each take a different product, and an oversized or undersized fit either bypasses sediment around the edges or blocks flow and floods the area. Check dams belong in any ditch or swale carrying concentrated flow, spaced so the toe of the upstream dam sits at or above the crest of the next one downstream. Stabilized construction entrances matter as much for offsite compliance as onsite — most jurisdictions cite tracked mud on public streets as a violation independent of whatever's happening inside the fence line.
Arizona conditions & spec guidance
Arizona's monsoon pattern is the design condition that matters most: long dry stretches followed by short, intense storms that generate flashy, high-volume runoff on ground that may still be hydrophobic from summer heat or a recent burn. BMPs sized for gentle, sustained rainfall in other regions can be undersized here — check dam spacing and inlet protection capacity should be set for a real design storm, not a rule of thumb.
We also see a lot of failed silt fence that was never actually trenched in, and wattles staked on top of loose soil instead of into it — both fail on the first real flow event. Installation detail is most of what separates a compliant, functioning BMP from a fence that's just there for the inspector.

Installation & maintenance
Installation follows the SWPPP layout and phasing — perimeter controls go in before grading disturbs the site, interior controls follow as drainage patterns develop, and inlet protection goes in before any inlet is exposed to runoff. We stage material for phased sites so controls move with the work instead of trapping equipment access.
Maintenance is where most sites actually fall out of compliance: sediment accumulation behind silt fence and wattles has to be removed before it reaches capacity, check dams need periodic sediment removal, and storm damage needs same-week repair, not next-inspection repair. We offer scheduled inspection and maintenance visits through the construction phase, which is usually the difference between a clean inspection record and a notice of violation.

- Do I need inlet protection at every storm drain?
