Grading and drainage
Every arena starts with subgrade shaped to the design slope — typically a gentle, consistent grade or crown that moves water off the riding surface without creating a noticeable slope for horse and rider. We laser-grade to that tolerance and build in perimeter drainage so a monsoon downpour sheds off the arena instead of pooling on it.
Arizona's rainfall pattern makes this the part most worth getting right: long dry stretches mean an arena can look fine on a poorly graded subgrade for months, then a single storm exposes standing water and eroded footing all at once.
Base course
A compacted aggregate base sits under the footing to provide a stable, well-draining structural layer — usually a road-base or decomposed granite material compacted in lifts to a firm, uniform surface. Base depth and material depend on native soil, drainage design and the footing planned above it; skipping or under-building the base is the most common reason an arena develops soft spots or ruts within the first year.

Footing selection
Footing material and depth depend on discipline and budget — sand-based footings for general riding, engineered blends with fiber or polymer additives for higher-performance arenas, and depth tuned to the impact and traction the riding discipline requires. We install to the depth and compaction the footing manufacturer or arena designer specifies, since footing performance is as much about installation consistency as the material itself.
