Grading & Earthwork — Arizona

We grade for drainage first — every pad and lot is shaped to move water where the civil plan intends, not just to a flat elevation.

Mass and fine grading

Mass grading sets the overall site elevations — cutting high areas, filling low ones, and building pads to subgrade elevation across a site. Fine grading follows behind it to bring surfaces to finish tolerance for paving, foundations, turf or hardscape. We run both off GPS or laser-controlled equipment so tolerances hold across large pads without hand-checking every grade stake.

Caliche and hard-dig conditions

Much of the Valley sits over a caliche layer — a cemented calcium carbonate hardpan that can stop a standard dozer blade or ripper cold. We identify caliche depth during earthwork rather than after equipment breaks down on it, and bring the ripping, breaking or blasting-adjacent equipment the material actually requires. Underestimating caliche is one of the most common causes of blown grading schedules on Arizona sites.

Cut, fill and compaction

We balance cut and fill on-site where the grading plan allows to cut haul costs, place and compact structural fill in lifts to the density the geotechnical report requires, and test or coordinate testing so compaction records are in hand before foundations or paving go in on top of it.

Grading that looks finished but wasn't compacted to spec shows up later as settlement cracks in slabs and pavement — we build to the compaction number, not just the visible grade.

Frequently asked questions

How do you handle caliche during grading?
We assess caliche depth and hardness early and bring ripping or breaking equipment sized to it, rather than discovering it mid-schedule with the wrong machine on site.
Do you handle compaction testing?
We compact fill in lifts to the geotechnical spec and coordinate with a testing lab for density verification. We recommend an independent geotechnical firm confirm results for anything bearing a structure.
Can you balance cut and fill to avoid hauling material off-site?
Where the grading plan and soil suitability allow it, yes — balancing on-site is usually the fastest and lowest-cost approach, and we flag early if a site is going to need import or export material.
