Post-Fire Erosion Control & Burn-Scar Restoration

After a wildfire, bare, water-repellent soil turns the first heavy rain into debris flows and flash flooding downslope — often within weeks of the burn, before vegetation has any chance to recover. Jenterra moves fast to stabilize burn scars: emergency erosion control, wattles and check dams, coir blankets, geocell and geogrid slope stabilization, hydroseeding and native revegetation, protecting homes, roads and watersheds while the land recovers.

The post-fire window

Fire changes soil, not just vegetation. Intense heat can volatilize soil organics and redeposit them as a waxy layer a few inches down, creating hydrophobic (water-repellent) soil that sheds rain instead of absorbing it. Combined with a slope stripped of canopy, litter and root structure, that means runoff and erosion rates can jump by an order of magnitude in the first one to three post-fire years — exactly when Arizona's monsoon or winter storms arrive.

Speed is the whole strategy. USDA Forest Service Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) teams typically complete assessments within days of containment because the highest-risk window is the first storm season after the burn, not years down the road. We work on that same clock: mobilizing to assess slope, drainage and soil-burn severity, then prioritizing the drainages and slopes that threaten structures, roads or downstream water supplies first.

Emergency BMPs

In the first days and weeks after a fire, the goal is to slow water and hold soil in place with whatever can be installed fast and hold up to ash-laden runoff.

  • Straw wattles and fiber rolls staked on contour to break slope length and slow sheet flow
  • Check dams in drainages and channels to reduce velocity and trap sediment before it reaches culverts or roads
  • Sediment control fencing and compost socks at property lines and drainage crossings
  • Straw mulch or bonded fiber matrix applied by hand or hydraulically on steep, hard-to-reach burn scars
  • Debris and sediment basin cleanouts to keep existing drainage infrastructure functioning

Slope stabilization systems

Once emergency controls are in and the immediate storm risk is triaged, we move to systems built to hold through one or more full wet seasons while vegetation re-establishes.

HDPE geocell confinement holds soil and seed mix in place on steep burn-scarred slopes where surface material alone would slide or wash. Geogrid reinforcement stabilizes fill sections and access roads rebuilt after fire damage. Coir erosion control blankets — heavier and longer-lasting than straw matting — protect the surface through repeated wet-dry cycles while roots take hold, and they biodegrade once vegetation is established instead of leaving synthetic debris on the hillside.

Where hydrophobic soil is severe, we coordinate soil treatment or scarification with the design team so blankets and seed have a chance to bond to the surface rather than sliding off it after the first rain.

Revegetation & hydroseeding

Vegetation is the long-term fix — roots hold soil, canopy breaks rainfall impact, and litter rebuilds infiltration. We hydroseed with native or agency-specified seed mixes matched to elevation and soil, often paired with tackifier and mulch fiber suited to the slope and burn severity.

Native seed sourced for the region establishes faster and needs less follow-up than generic mixes, and it matches what agencies typically require for burned public and tribal land. We track germination and come back to overseed or repair blanket sections that didn't hold through the first storms.

Working with agencies & insurers

Post-fire work rarely happens in isolation — it's coordinated with BAER teams, county flood control districts, forest service contracts, HOAs, or insurance adjusters assessing property risk. We provide documentation of installed BMPs, photos and material specifications that support insurance claims, grant-funded restoration work, and agency sign-off, and we work from the burn severity maps and treatment prescriptions those teams produce rather than guessing at scope.

How soon after a fire should stabilization start?
As soon as the burn area is safe to access and before the next significant storm. In Arizona that can mean weeks, not months — monsoon season and winter storms don't wait for a burn scar to recover on its own.
Why is burned soil more erosive than normal bare soil?
Fire can create a water-repellent (hydrophobic) layer just under the surface, so rain runs off instead of soaking in. Combined with the loss of canopy, litter and roots, that produces sharply higher runoff and debris-flow risk in the first post-fire storm seasons.
Do you work directly with BAER teams or insurance adjusters?
Yes. We install to agency and adjuster-approved treatment prescriptions, document work as it's completed, and coordinate scheduling with the assessment timeline rather than working around it.
Will the stabilization materials need to be removed later?
Coir blankets and straw-based products are designed to biodegrade as vegetation establishes. Geocell and geogrid used on structural slopes or access roads are typically permanent, engineered elements rather than temporary controls.
