From rough grade to finished pad: what site preparation involves
Cuts, fills, compaction and grade checks. The work beneath a finished surface matters as much as the final pass.

Rough grade establishes the shape
Rough grading moves the site toward its planned elevations. Cuts remove material where the ground is high; fills build up areas where it is low. The work establishes the basic form of a pad, roadway or other surface and its relationship to drainage.
The starting point is the project plan and the conditions on site. Access, existing features and the next phase of construction all affect how the work is sequenced.
Fill and compaction are part of the foundation
Fill placement is not simply dumping material until the elevation looks right. Material is placed in controlled lifts and compacted to the project requirements. The material selection, lift thickness and verification requirements should follow the specification.
A finished surface depends on what supports it. Base preparation and compaction need to be addressed before the final grading pass, not after the surface is handed over.
Finish grading brings the surface to tolerance
Finish grading brings the prepared surface to its final elevations and slopes. Laser-controlled grading equipment can help maintain the required plane across a pad or arena. Grade checks connect the machine work back to the project requirements.
Flat is not always the objective. A surface may need a defined fall toward a drainage point, or transitions to adjacent work. The correct finish is the one the design calls for.
Define the handoff before work starts
Confirm the finished elevation, tolerance, drainage details, base materials and the condition required by the next trade. Clear scope boundaries help the team distinguish grading work from subsequent paving, concrete or surface installation.
