Cinder and volcanic soils behave differently than desert soils

Flagstaff sits on the southern edge of the San Francisco Volcanic Field, and a lot of the ground around the city — especially north and east toward Sunset Crater and the cinder hills — is loose volcanic cinder and ash rather than the caliche and clay common in the Valley. Cinder drains fast and doesn't cement together the way desert hardpan does, which means it offers almost no inherent resistance to sheet or rill erosion once vegetation cover is removed. On steeper grades, cinder slopes can ravel and slide under their own weight even without much rainfall.

That soil behavior changes the calculus for slope work: blankets and geocells need to key in deeper and anchor more aggressively than they would in a cohesive clay soil, and revegetation matters more here than almost anywhere else in the state because root structure is doing real structural work, not just cosmetic cover.

Burn-scar terrain and elevated fire history

Flagstaff and the surrounding Coconino National Forest have a long, well-documented history of significant wildfire, and burned watersheds above the city have produced serious post-fire flooding and debris-flow events in past years as hydrophobic soils shed water almost as fast as pavement would. Areas below burn scars can see flows arrive faster and carry more sediment and debris than the same storm would produce on unburned ground, which is why post-fire slope stabilization, straw wattle and mulch application, and temporary channel protection are recurring scopes for us in the Flagstaff area rather than one-off emergency work.

We install post-fire stabilization on a scheduled basis as soon as we can mobilize after a burn; for true emergency response immediately following a fire, coordinate with your county emergency management contact and call us for the follow-on stabilization and revegetation phase.
Does winter weather stop work in Flagstaff?
Snow cover and frozen ground limit installation for parts of the winter. We plan around that by prioritizing stabilization before the ground freezes and again before spring snowmelt.
